Kraken Parent Payward Connects to SGB Net for 24/7 Institutional Dollar Settlement

What happened
Payward, the company behind Kraken, has connected to Singapore Gulf Bank’s SGB Net. According to crypto.news, the connection gives select institutions 24/7 US dollar settlement. The report frames the arrangement as applying to selected institutional counterparties rather than to the general user base.
The detail worth reading carefully is the counterparty on the other side. SGB Net is a bank settlement network. Connecting an exchange operator to a bank rail is a different proposition from connecting it to another crypto venue, because the settlement leg stops being an on-chain transfer and becomes a correspondent-banking movement.
What 24/7 settlement actually changes
The constraint this addresses is business hours. Wholesale settlement in most corridors is cut off over weekends and holidays, so an institution holding a dollar position through a weekend has a funding gap it must bridge. A 24/7 rail removes that calendar mismatch:
- Positions can be closed on any day, which changes how risk is carried over weekends.
- The counterparty set is limited, so this is access for eligible participants rather than a general product.
- The dollar leg becomes conventional bank settlement, which introduces correspondent-bank exposure in place of on-chain settlement risk.
The trade is therefore capacity against dependency. Institutions get continuous settlement, and in exchange the settlement leg relies on a narrower set of financial intermediaries.
Why it is a tokenisation story in practice
Most of the tokenisation discussion concerns assets, but settlement is the part that has to work in conventional money. An institution will not move a position to a tokenised representation if the cash leg only closes on business days. Connecting a bank rail is the step that makes a tokenised or crypto-held position operationally equivalent to a conventional one.
